Interior Design Q&A, Part 1

Interior Design Q&A Part 1

Earlier this year, my best friend, Jaclyn, and I launched a podcast, The Millennial Homemakers. You can subscribe on iTunes and Google Play. Be sure to tune in weekly for all things home, hostessing, and more. Way back in Season 1, we answered some interior design questions.

I’ve expanded on some of my answers here. To learn more about Jaclyn, visit her at Frazier Lynn.

What got you interested in interior design and decorating?

I first became interested in interior design in middle school, when I would watch “Trading Spaces” on TLC with my mom. I loved watching a room transform into something entirely new. A lot of the work was done by ordinary people, instead of by the designers, which has since given me confidence to work on my own home. Since then, I’ve become addicted to HGTV, particularly “Fixer Upper,” “Property Brothers,” and “Love it or List it.” (Side note, I’m really sad that Fixer Upper will be off the air soon, but I’m also super excited about the upcoming Hearth & Home with Magnolia line at Target. Joanna Gaines is also writing a design book, and I can’t wait!!)

How would you describe your style?

My favorite style is farmhouse. My house isn’t quite there yet, but I’m working toward having a farmhouse-styled house. Joanna Gaines has definitely helped normalize the farmhouse style, but it’s been around for a long time. It started in actual farmhouses, but you no longer need a farmhouse to embrace it.

I love the simplicity of farmhouse style, and that it brings the outside in by reflecting the land and focusing on natural beauty. Farmhouse doesn’t rely on furniture and decor to be brand new, but instead, reuses items through recycling or upcycling. I love this because Drew and I don’t have a large budget, so I can decorate how I like by reusing items we already have or by creating some DIY pieces.

Farmhouse style is very welcoming and comfortable because it uses soft colors, and that’s the feeling I want to create for anyone who walks in my home. I’m also falling in love with the Danish concept ‘hygge,’ which is the feeling of cozy contentment. It fits with my version of farmhouse so well!!

Farmhouse also works really well with a lot of other styles. It blends very easily with a more traditional style, which is great for me because that’s Drew’s preferred style, and I, of course, want him to feel comfortable in our home. It also blends well with the industrial style, which I’ve been liking more and more recently. I like the industrial style because it utilizes more masculine lines, so our house is becoming a good balance of masculine and femininity – perfect for me and Drew!

What color(s) do you use the most?

I use some shade of blue in every room in my house. We’re in the process of painting our house, and I chose Icebreaker by HGTV Home by Sherwin Williams as the main color, so soon the entire interior of our house will be blue. I tend to use a lot of navy because it’s a great neutral, but still very warm, comfortable, and calming.

What are your favorite materials or textures?

I love to choose materials that last and have stood the test of time, like woods and steel. Too much of these materials, however, can create a very masculine and cold atmosphere, so I like to add in some sheer fabrics and laces to add some femininity and warmth to a room.

What is your favorite design trick?

I love mixing higher-end objects with more budget-friendly items. If you have a room full of high-end items, nothing stands out, but by mixing them in with other items, you not only save money, but you also can really highlight those more expensive or sentimental items. Decorating is all about finding a good balance, whether it’s mixing materials, colors, or even price points.

What are your must-have home decor items?

I really like decorating with items that are both decorative and useful. For example, I think my cutting boards are really cute, so I display them on my kitchen counter, instead of hiding them away somewhere.

I also love adding personal touches to every room of our house. When someone visits us, I want them to see me and Drew (sometimes literally through pictures) in each room.

Check back next week for part 2.
